Moving into a senior living setting is one of the most emotional and logistically complex transitions older adults and their families face.
In the rush to coordinate the move, living spaces are often set up quickly without considering safety, mobility, or daily routines—leaving families scrambling to make adjustments during the first days and weeks.
Move-in support is typically limited or outside the scope of staff services at senior living communities. While some communities may offer basic move assistance, it typically does not include the clinical and functional expertise needed to fully optimize a new environment.
Functional Design & Transition Strategy
I help older adults and their families transition to senior living communities with greater confidence and ease by creating environments that support safety, function, and comfort. I ensure that the first days in a residence feel reassuring, intuitive, and tailored to individual needs.
The Challenge:
The first few days in a senior living residence can shape the entire transition experience. Without thoughtful planning and professional insight into safety, mobility, cognition, and daily function, spaces are often arranged in ways that may unintentionally increase fall risk, stress and frustration, making an already emotional time even harder.
The Solution:
I provide a specialized transition service, drawing on 20 years of experience helping people navigate daily life and interact safely and comfortably with their surroundings. My goal is to ensure you or your loved one is settled into a home that is welcoming, functional, and tailored to their unique needs from day one.
The Settle - In Strategy:
Phase 1 / Pre-Move: Design Map & Functional Essentials (prior to day of move)
• Virtual or in-person consultation
• In-person assessment of the new space and current furniture
• Gather insights about routines, habits, preferences, abilities, and limitations
• Create a functional design map tailored to you or your loved one
Phase 2 / Move-Day Oversight
• Manage furniture placement for safety and flow
• Optimize environment for functionality and comfort
• Ensure essential areas are ready and intuitive for immediate use
Phase 3 / Post-Move Optimization
• Complete organizational setup
• Functional organization: labels, reach zones, recommended products to promote safety and independence if needed, etc.
• Fine-tune the environment for long-term comfort and safety
Phases 2 and 3 are generally completed within a 2-day period. Depending on the timing of the move & needs, post-optimization may continue from the move-day into the following day.
I designed this program to help families navigate this life transition & to make the first night feel like a fresh start, not a clinical transition.
The objectives are:
• Facilitate a smooth, professionally guided transition into senior living settings
• Optimize set-up of the new environment for function, safety, and comfort from day one
• Reduce emotional overwhelm for both the residents and their families
• Preserve dignity, autonomy, and familiarity during a major life change
• Reduce decision fatigue by identifying must-have items based on functional priorities and sentimental value
• Guidance for intentional selection of items
• Minimize physical and emotional burden on families
• Allow families to focus on connection and reassurance - not logistics
• Create a moving experience that feels like a new chapter - not a loss
• Serve as the strategic bridge between chaos and calm during the transition

Environmental Optimization & Fall Risk Statement
Services are designed to proactively reduce environmental fall risks through strategic layout planning, adaptation recommendations, and functional setup. While environmental modifications & optimization may decrease risk factors, falls cannot be entirely prevented, and no guarantee of fall prevention is expressed or implied.
Adjustment & Cognitive Transition Statement
Relocation to a new environment may temporarily increase confusion, disorientation, or emotional distress, particularly for individuals with cognitive impairment. While environmental familiarity and functional setup are prioritized and reduce risk, adjustment responses vary and cannot be predicted or prevented.
Scope of Services – What Is NOT Included
Services do not include physical transportation of belongings, packing or moving labor, medical care, medication management, direct personal care, structural home modifications, or licensed contractor services. Clients are responsible for coordinating movers and transportation providers.
Please note that while I optimize and organize spaces to support safety, function and ability-centered independence, permanent structural barriers would require remediation beyond the scope of my service. Some types of installation requiring tools or construction may also require a licensed contractor.
